My Feeble First Steps or Thoughts of a First-Time RPG Designer
It's been almost a week since the end of the One-Page RPG Jam 2023 and "The Court of Nothing" has received nearly 200 views and 50 downloads. This is probably minuscule compared to the numbers churned out by actual RPG designers and authors but, as a complete first-timer, I couldn't be happier with the results. I feel like I built a functioning car in my backyard using only scrap and spare time. Yes, the solar battery can only carry a 30-minute charge and the whole vehicle will fold in on itself if exposed to water but it works and that's more than I expected.
I hope that everyone who's downloaded this thing has enjoyed playing it or just reading it. Personally, I had a lot of fun puzzling out how to fit everything I needed for a functional game loop into just two pages while still keeping space for flavor/narrative. More importantly, I learned a lot about the flaws in my writing style and about the importance of editing or, rather, expressing more with fewer words.
If you happened to read or download "The Court of Nothing" while browsing itch.io for your next Solo RPG, please leave a comment on the project page. Feedback, positive and negative, will help me improve my mechanics and design philosophy. In fact, I joined the game jam as a sort of preparation for something more ambitious: I have been working on another Solo RPG that uses a more "expressive" version of the mechanics seen in "The Court of Nothing" and has many more features besides. I'm hoping to have this new project published and ready for digital distribution by the end of the year so keep an eye out for the inevitable update explaining why that deadline was too optimistic.
